What is Counselling?

Therapeutic ways to help.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is based on the concept that changing our thinking patterns can have a powerful effect on your emotions. Focus on the way people think and act

  • Cognitive means mental process like thinking, dreaming, memories and thoughts
  • Behaviour means everything you do, what you say, act or avoidance both action and inaction.
  • Therapy: Systematic approach to combating a problem or illness or irregular condition.

Central concept of CBT is that you think the way you feel.

CBT is a short term therapy that revolves around solving problems you present and can treat many conditions and symptoms such as sleep problems, concentration issues, social issues, difficulties at work or problems within the family. The aim would be to look at the patterns of behaviour and your core beliefs and explore alternatives or different ways to think or act.

Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT)

REBT is proposed to be a practical and action led approach. It focuses on your behaviours, providing techniques that will help to solve future problems and understand the behaviour of others.

REBT focuses on irrational thoughts and behaviours which lead to unhealthy negative emotions and behaviour, replacing them with more rational positive thoughts and behaviours.

It is designed to be helpful in all walks of life including work, home and family.

A key concept is that we are influenced a great deal by our past, but contents that the past manifests in our present in our current beliefs and behaviours.

Although we cannot change our past, we can learn to accept it and see our past from a different perspective and change our future.

Psychodynamic approach.

Exploring the link between the past and the presenting issues and help to understand the impact of our past and our learnt behaviour.

We would aim to explore your overall sense of self in relationship to your past and how this may affect your self esteem and self worth.

Gestalt Therapy.

The aim of Gestalt therapy is to raise your awareness of how you function in your environment (with family, work, school or friends). The key focus of the therapy is more on what is happening (moment to moment ).

The Therapy takes into consideration the whole person including their thoughts, behaviour, body sensation and dreams.

Gestalt therapy has been used for the treatment of a wide range including crisis intervention, to help with post-traumatic stress disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, depression or anxiety disorders

Transactional Analysis.

Transactional Analysis (TA) is a theory that involves an individual's growth and development. It is also a theory related to communication and child development explaining the connections to our past and how this influences decisions we make. TA was developed during the late 1950's by psychiatrist Eric Berne.

Berne recognised three key “ego-states” - Parent, Adult and Child. The Parent ego state is a set of thoughts, feelings and behaviours we leant from our parents and other important people. The Adult ego state relates to direct responses to the 'here and now' that are not influenced by our past. The Child ego state is a set of thoughts, feelings and behaviours learnt from our childhood. The ego-states are useful for analysing unconscious scripts and "games" people play.

TA seeks to identify what goes wrong in communication and provide opportunities for individuals to change repetitive patterns that limit their potential. It encourages individuals to analyse previous decisions they have made to understand the direction and patterns of their life for themselves. It also helps clients to trust their decisions and think/act as an individual improving the way they feel about themselves. TA is a humanistic approach and focuses on the here and now concept.
